Who we are
A registered Alberta non-profit with roots reaching back more than three decades, the Urhobo Progress Union Calgary is the home of the Urhobo community in the Calgary Metropolitan Region.
Three decades of community
The Urhobo Progress Union Calgary traces its roots back to the early 1990s, when Urhobo and Isoko immigrants arriving in Calgary in search of educational and economic opportunities began forming informal support networks. As more families settled, these early connections grew into regular cultural and social gatherings that helped members navigate life in a new country.
This informal fellowship became a structured organisation with the first official meeting in January 2008, where Engr. Mike Eghre-Bello became the pioneer president. By 2009, the group adopted a constitution and formally registered as a non-profit in Alberta.
In 2015, under the visionary leadership of Prof. Duke Okoro, the association officially registered as a chapter of the Urhobo Progress Union America (UPUA), solidifying its connection to the global Urhobo diaspora. As membership surpassed 50 individuals and families, the association reflected its growing Isoko representation by rebranding as the Urhobo-Isoko Association of Calgary (UIAC) in 2020.
In 2026, following the establishment of an independent Isoko Association of Calgary, the organisation returned to its foundational identity as the Urhobo Progress Union Calgary (UPUC) — the name it carries today.
UPUC membership remains open to all Urhobo people by birth, marriage, or adoption of Urhobo ethnicity and culture, continuing a legacy of unity, cultural preservation, and mutual support that spans more than three decades.
Why we exist
The Urhobo Progress Union Calgary exists to create a socio-cultural and family-based association that serves as a medium through which Urhobo people in the Calgary Metropolitan Region can access beneficial services and information for academic, family, and career development.
